ELA: This week we will start our first unit with a focus on using descriptive words to describe a character, setting, or emotion in the book. We are beginning our first novel called “Caleb’s Choice”. This story describes a struggle between making the right choice and making the choice everyone else wants the character to make. We will discuss and read the first 3 chapters together, and use the text to practice describing and talking about the characters, setting, plot, and emotions in the book. We will also start our first week of spelling. We learn sound patterns in fourth grade and have a spelling test every other Friday. Our first test will be on September 1st. This week’s sound pattern is -aunch and the words with this sound pattern are launch, paunch, and haunch. Here are some online activities for students to practice:
1. Elements of a Story Game
2. Rags to Riches Game
3. Stories to Grow By – visit this site to find a story, read the story, and practice answering questions about it

Science: In science we will begin to look at maps and discuss how we can notice changes to land over time by comparing map features of an area. Students will look carefully at a map of Missouri and look for different land forms found here. Check out these practice activities:
1. Google Earth– look at some maps from around the world
2. Mr. Nussbaum’s 50 State Geography Site
3. Mr. Nussbaum’s World Geography Site

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
