Week of October 12th-16th!

I hope everyone enjoyed your extra long weekend! We were able to go to some great teacher professional development, and then I was able to complete room 16’s report cards. If you have not requested a time for conferences next week, please do so as soon as possible. Here are some important dates this week to keep in mind:

1. Early Release Day: Wednesday, October 14th at 2:50
2. Hazelwood Family Fall Festival: Wednesday, October 14th from 5:30-7 pm
3. No Office Referral Party: Friday, October 16th from 3:15-3:45

Science:
We will continue our unit on Earth Materials by learning about the three categories of rocks and how they are formed:
1. igneous rocks are formed by fire or heat from volcanoes/deep within the Earth’s surface
2. sedimentary rocks are formed when layers of sediment pile on top of each other
3. metamorphic rocks are formed by heat and pressure deep within the earth

Activities:
1. Rock tests online game
2. Who Am I? rock game
3. Type of Rocks

ELA:
This week we will work on the sound pattern -ence (fence, hence) and the -kin suffix (napkin, munchkin). We will also continue our text evidence unit. This asks the students to answer a question, but to also give a specific word or phrase from the text as proof or evidence for the answer. This can be very tricky for students because they often want to give a detail that they know, instead of one from the story.

Activities:
1. Powerpoint explaining text evidence
2. Text Evidence video
