Author’s Purpose Hunt

Work in your team of 3 to identify an example story for each of the 3 types of Author’s Purposes. You will be given 3 note cards to use for answers. Write Persuade on 1, Inform on the 2nd, and Entertain on the 3rd. Look through Storyworks magazine to find one story for each type (you are not allowed to pick “Scared Chicken”). You must do the following when you find an example of each type:

1. Write the name of the story. Tell what the story is about. Tell what words the author uses to make it that type of Author’s Purpose.

A sample sentence may look like:

The author’s purpose for writing the story _______________________
is ________________________________. The story is about __________________________________. The author uses the following words to show the author’s purpose:

2. _____________________ on page:
3. _____________________ on page:

Here is an example:

The author’s purpose for writing “Scared Chicken” is entertaining. The story is about a girl who is afraid to dress like a chicken until she finds out about a protest in town to help allow families to raise chickens in their backyards. She becomes brave after thinking of Nelly Bly and shows up to the protest in a chicken costume. The author uses the following words to show the author’s purpose:
1. “Don’t be a chicken.” on p. 11
2. “I’m thick” said Viktor on p. 13
