Week of September 18th-22nd!!

I hope everyone had a restful weekend. It was so cool to see the balloons from the Great Forest Park Balloon Race fly over Walker Elementary (shared on the school’s Facebook page). Here are some important dates for the week:

Monday-Thursday: read 20 minutes, complete reading log
Wednesday, September 20: Early Dismissal at 2:50, Pencil Palace
Friday, September 22: Reading logs due, spelling test

ELA: This week we are learning to become more specific when writing and discussing what we have read. We are focusing on two areas: using sequential and descriptive words. We will talk about time-order words such as first, next, last, finally, etc and about turning boring words into more descriptive words to convey a mental picture in our heads. We will also have a spelling test on Friday that covers last week’s words (heave, leave, cleave, sheave, and weave) as well as this week’s words (hedge, ledge, wedge, sledge, dredge, and pledge). We will begin our unit on syllable types by discussing closed syllables = a syllable that has one vowel followed by one or more consonants. An example is: dog. The o is closed by the g at the end. Throughout the remainder of the semester, we will learn about the other syllable types. Check out these practice pages:
1. Open Versus Closed Syllables game
2. Tea Sequencing Game
3. Sequencing Practice

Science:
In Science, we will continue our unit on Phases of Matter and how the matter can change from one phase to another. We will also begin our discussion on mixtures and solutions. Check out these practice activities:
1. States of Matter rap
2. States of Matter Sorting Game
3. Changes in States of Matter online game
