Week of January 16th-20th!!!

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
Dr. King

I hope everyone had a chance to pause and think about what they can do to keep Dr. King’s dream alive! I saw lots of reports on the news of people volunteering and helping others out.

Here are some important dates for this week:
Tuesday, January 17th: reading logs go home, due on Friday (no Monday reading)
Wednesday, January 18th: Pencil Palace and early dismissal at 2:50
Friday, January 20th: reading logs due, Future Wildcats reading program @ 10:30 (preschool age children)

ELA: This week we will work on one of my favorite units of the year: words and phrases that get their meaning from Greek Mythology and characters in Greek Mythology. Words like “hurculean” come from the character “Hercules”. Hercules was a Greek character who had immense strength and the word means to do something that requires a lot of effort and strength. We will learn many more examples this week. Check out these pages:
1. Greek Myths for Kids
2. Greek trivia games (we have not learned all of these stories, but still fun!)
3. Greek crafts and games

Science:
The ice storm that came last weekend gave fourth graders an extra 4 days to study for our science test, so I am expecting a lot of really good grades!!! We will begin our new unit on Wednesday: Energy, Magnetism, and Electricity. This week we will focus on where energy comes from and different types of energy (light, electrical, heat, wind, etc). Check out these activities for more practice:
1. video about types of energy
2. interactive site about types of energy
3. Forms of Energy review
