Week of October 24th-28th!

Can you believe this is the last full week of October? We have been so lucky with the wonderful weather on the weekends. I have spent time outdoors with my family and hope we still have a few more weeks of nice weather before it starts to turn cold. Here are some upcoming important dates:

Red-Ribbon Week: We will celebrate saying no to drugs by dressing up the following days:
Tuesday- Tacky Day: come dressed in crazy, mismatched attire
Wednesday-Sports Team Day: dress in your favorite team to watch or play for
Thursday-Sweats Day: come dressed in sweatshirts and sweatpants
Friday-Superhero Day: come dressed in your favorite superhero costume/shirt/cape, etc

Don’t forget to read 20 minutes a night! Reading logs are due on Friday.

Thursday, October 27th: Read for the Record Night- Come enjoy a read-aloud story as we try and set a new world record for students reading the same book at the same time!

ELA: This week we are covering 2 sound patterns: -etch words (sketch, fetch, etc) and -ield words (yield, field, shield). Our spelling test will be this Friday. We will also spend our week talking about Text Features. Text Features are things that authors include in their writing to highlight important words and ideas. Examples include bold print, graphs, illustrations, captions, etc. Check out these practice ideas:

Science: This week we are beginning our new unit in science. The unit is called “Earth Materials”. Students will learn about rocks, minerals, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. We are starting this week with reading land maps and other types of maps. Check out the following activities:

3. Pangea Interactive Map – see what the early continents looked like before they began to drift and move
