Week of August 24th-28th, 2015

Welcome back to another wonderful week in fourth grade! The weather is looking to be beautiful this week, and hopefully you will all get a chance to go outside and enjoy it. Here are a few reminders for the week:

1. We still have several students who forgot to get their weekly report signed. Please make sure that these are being checked over the weekend, signed, and returned on Monday morning. If parents have any comments or questions, they can write them on the Friday report. This is a great way for us to keep our communication going.

2. Band and orchestra lessons begin this week. Orchestra lessons will take place on Mondays and band lessons take place on Wednesdays. If you have not rented your instrument yet, you can do so at Armstrong Elementary tonight (Monday).

3. Our first spelling test will take place this Friday. Students will not have a list sent home. We have been practicing sound patterns and suffixes. Students will be asked to list examples (of their choosing) from each of the sound pattern and suffix.

What will we learn this week?
ELA- This week we will finish our unit on inferences and begin looking at cause and effect relationships in historical or technical text. Students will also create and read timelines of historical events. Our sound pattern for this week is -aunt with sample words including: haunt, taunt, and jaunt. Our suffixes this week include: -ar, -er, and -or. Some sample words include: grammar, doctor, teacher. Check out the following activities to practice our ELA skills at home:

1. Cause and Effect Maze – Read each sentence and identify if each part is either the cause or effect. Correct answers help to guide Flippy through the maze.

2. Cause and Effect Practice

3. Timeline Game

Science- Students will practice measuring matter this week. We will learn how to find the mass of an object by using a balance scale and gram cubes. We will also practice finding the volume of box-shaped objects. We will then find the volume of liquids using graduated cylinders. Finally, we will wrap up the week using water to find the volume of objects through a method called “displacement”.
